2007 NEWS ARCHIVE

December 21st 2007 - A Big 'Thank You' to our visitors during 2007 - Wishing you all a very Happy Christmas and New Year - We look forward to welcoming everyone in 2008 with our many new features and displays for the 2008 season.

December 21st 2007 - SPECIAL EVENTS - Our 2008 Special Events are already advertised and bookings are already open for these tours and shows - See our Special Events Page.

December 16th 2007 - METAL COMES TO HOLMPTON - On Sunday the radar operations room echoed to the sound of Metal/Thrash band 'Sworn Around' as they arrived along with 'Ash TV' to record the video of their latest track. Possibly one of the more unusual uses for our operations room which after all would have co-ordinated defence of the UK if there had ever been a nuclear attack against the nation. Just down the corridor in the offices mess you could hear the music through the ventilation system, but up on the surface through 10ft of solid concrete 'not a sound' We wish then every success with their upcoming gigs and 2008 tour.

December 13th 2007 - New News Page coming for 2008 - Current News Pages will be archived.

December 13th 2007 -  We are often asked about our redident Cat 'Amber' she is 10 years young and has lived at RAF Holmpton for 5 years. Our visitors often see her curled up on her favourite chair in our administration wing. Amber has a series of cat flaps that allow her 24 hour access to the outside world, although she chooses to spend the majority of her time safe and secure and totally in charge underground at Royal Air Force Holmpton.

December 12th 2007 - Stage 7 of 8 was completed this week on our New Power Supply Project with the removal of the 11,000volt underground transformer. This was a massive task as the transformer was located in the underground sub station some 130yards from the loading bay. Weighing in at just under 2tons the unit was quite a challenge to move on rollers, then using an electric winch to pull it up the access tunnel, before using our hoist to lift it to the surface and finally using a crane and transporter to take it off site. As this was a fairly new transformer only installed here in the 1990's it will be refurbished and put to good use at another site. In January 2008 we will be installing our new generators and this will complete the new Power Supply Project. Full details on our About Us page and further pictures of the project works if you scroll down this newspage.

For 2008 we will be running this tour again but over two nights to allow for more visitors due to our being unable to meet demand for tickets this year.  Many thanks to all those who came along and we hope you had a 'spook free' journey home. Once again the 2008 event will be in aid of the Withernsea Lifeboat.

November 10th 2007 - Work has already started on the many improvements and changes for the 2008 season - These will include some new exhibits - Improvemets to the existing displays with new viewing areas and a new public tour with new films and presentations - The 2008 opening times are already available on our Public Tours page and a full description of the New Tour will be published along with some pictures in early 2008.

November 1st 2007 - YEDL & MURPHY have now completed Phase 1 of our new power supply installation and the following pictures tell the story. Phase 2 will see connection of the new supply by Scottish Power and at the end of November YEDL will return for Phase 3 to remove the old sub station - More pictures to follow later to complete the story - Once completed our main supply will have reduced from an available capacity of 1megawatt (high voltage) to 50kva (low voltage) and internally we have already reduced our energy call from over 200kilowatts to under 45kilowatts, with the installation of energy effecient lighting / space heating / water heating etc. Apart from a huge cost saving to ourselves we have also reduced our 'carbon footrprint' by some 80%. The new system is due for completion on 29th November.

We are always happy to host these nights and full details may be found on our PUBLIC TOURS page.

September 27th 2007 - 'In Memory of Moto' our much loved Station Macot who sadly passed away at 6.30pm today after a short illness. We adopted her in May 2002 after she had been abandoned at a motorway service area, hence the name 'Moto' We think she was about 3 to 4 years old then so she has had a good life of about 10 to 11 years and throughout her time with us she has provided constant love - constant companionship - excellent security - constant entertainment and has loved working with our sheep, the last of which she rounded up yesterday. We will all miss her and wish her well with her journey to the great 'Sky Kennel'

August 21st 2007 -  ARCHIVE NEWS - For about 5 years a major privately owned archive has been stored at RAF Holmpton comprising a collection of information about Defence Bunkers and Cold War Sites built in the UK between 1945 to the present day. We originally planned to open this archive to researchers, but with so many other ongoing projects we have never had the time or the resources to do this. We are now delighted to say that ownersrhip of this archive has passed to Subterranea Britannica, the UK's foremost society on 'things underground' and they have now provided the archive with a new home. They plan to firstly catalogue and index the archive, and then make it available for research to their members and the wider public through their website. This is a major undertaking and will take a consideable time to complete, however the work is already in hand and very shortly some of the archive's many photographic images will be used to expand their already extensive web pages, with much of the other information being used to add to their comprehensive historical information. Full information can be found on their own website, and of course anyone can join 'Subterranea Britannica' to benefit from the full membership package, which includes conferences, study days, visits to interesting places and much more. However a great deal of this information is already available 'free to all' on their extensive website, and we wish them well with this major new archive project, which will now see the vast amount of this unique information becoming available to public view for the first time.  www.subbrit.org.uk - Use this link to visit their website

We are very grateful to the Defence Communications Agency & RAF Rudloe for the provision of so much historic equipment which was recovered from the formerly secret and now decommissioned Government Headquarters 'Burlington' near Bath, without which it would not have been possible to restore this area.

2005 & 2004 NEWS ARCHIVE

Our new website was only established in January 2006 and so we do not have a record of the various news items before this date. However by way of a summary RAF Holmpton operated a visitor season during 2005 and this was the first full season of opening. In 2004 we operated a brief two month season which we had to extend by another month due to public demand. 2004 was the very first opening of the site to visitors and we also held a reunion for past veterans who had worked at the site during the first 30 years of Radar operations. On the very first day of opening our guides found it a very strange experience being followed down the access tunnel by members of the public, who for the previous 50 years or so would have been arrested for even trying to get in ! We were delighted to be granted pemission to open the bunker to visitors and since then literally thousands of people have visited Royal Air Force Holmpton.

PRESERVING OUR COLD WAR HERITAGE
